The sapwood of almost all tree species is pale without extractives. The same process occurs in other woods such as Ebony with it's very black color heartwood and also the beautiful brown of black walnut is caused by it's extractives as well. These extractives give purple heart it's very distinctive purple color. Transitioning from sapwood to heartwood is followed by a buildup of many deposits and materials that is commonly called extractives. It is only on exposure that it turns into the rich purple. Beginning at the core or pith, this central dead wood is called heartwood. Sourced from South America, when Purple Heart wood veneer is cut it is a dull greyish colour. ![]() Specific cells within the wood conduct sap and store nutrients and over a period of many years, the purple heart tree no longer requires the entire trunk to conduct sap and the central part of the stem begins to die. It is a colorful American hardwood and is often popular with furniture and other wood. Commonly planted in pots or displayed in hanging baskets, purple hearts are aptly named, as their foliage appears in silvery purple and violet hues. The 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth marked the revival of the award (February 22, 1932). Purpleheart wood is a unique type of lumber sometimes called amaranth. It's a beautiful perennial with long, trailing stems that resemble rambling vines. Purple heart wood is purple because of it's heartwood extractives.
